Chapter 11: Goin' Home I'm Dreamin'

It seemed prudent to check with Doc about what I would and would not be permitted to do when I was once again home. So, even before he had completely finished removing the pain ball, I asked, "What are the do’s and don’ts when I get home, Doc?"

As he was wrapping up his work with the ball, Dr. Leonard replied, but without looking at me, "You can do anything you want." Then after a brief pause, he followed with the caveat, "Within reason."

I was silent, a bit perplexed by his answer.

The doc had probably gotten the response he wanted. By this I mean to say that Dr. Leonard, in my experience, enjoys giving a simple answer when, perhaps, one is expecting a response that is more complicated, or even ornate. I, for one, appreciate his policy of keeping things as simple as possible for his patients. What could possibly be a better policy?

Now finished with all of his duties relative to my incision and pain ball, the doc positioned himself so as to look me in the eyes. He then deciphered his answer.

"Reasonable daily living," he began, "must become the guiding principle in your recovery."
"Of course," he quickly added, "what reasonable daily living looks like will change from day-to-day, as you develop momentum in your recovery."
